Intramural Official

Reports to:

  • Intramural Manager
  • Intramural Intern
  • Intramural Coordinator

Responsibilities:

  • General Duties
    • Enforce departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation
    • Support an environment that encourages, values and delivers outstanding customer service
  • Administrative Functions
    • Provide sportsmanship rating for each game and document all sportsmanship issues before, during and after contests
    • Assist managers with all necessary forms
    • Set-up and clean-up playing areas before and after each competition with an emphasis on risk management
  • Contest and Facility Management
    • Officiate intramural sports as outlined by staff during Officials’ Training Clinics
    • Promote good sportsmanship amongst all participants by enforcing policies & procedures as outlined in the Intramural Handbook
    • Utilize proper mechanics and signals as instructed during training by UConn Intramurals staff
    • Scorekeep contests and provide assistance to officials and managers to ensure safe and fair play
    • Register all participants and confirm eligibility by verifying UConn ID with team roster before each contest
  • General Staff Functions
    • Attend all trainings and meetings
    • Obtain and maintain CPR/AED certification
    • Have knowledge of sport rules and department policies

Other Job Requirements:

  • Schedule will vary. Weekend and evening work required.  Must be able to work late at night and during inclement weather situations. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Willingness to learn and ability to take feedback and apply promptly
  • Demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal & time management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous officiating experience

 

Intramural Manager

Reports to:

  • Intramural Intern

Positions Supervised:

  • Intramural Official

 Responsibilities:

  • General Duties
    • Responsible for enforcing departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation
    • Support and environment that encourages, values and delivers outstanding customer service
  • Administrative Functions
    • Document reporting and leaving time for student employees on shift
    • Complete all necessary paperwork according to departmental standards as outlined in Manager training
    • Address and document violations of employee handbook
    • Provide and record constructive feedback to intramural staff
    • Distribute intramural equipment necessary for intramural games to participants and report issues with equipment to professional staff
    • Assist professional staff in demonstrating relevant skills and providing feedback to new officials during training clinics
    • Adjust daily officials schedule as necessary to avoid conflicts and maximize efficiency throughout shifts
  • Contest and Facility Management
    • Check facilities for safety issues prior to the start of contests, report all risk management issues to Intramural Intern
    • Document arrival and closing time as well as any issues with shared facilities
    • Ensure proper set-up and breakdown of all intramural facilities
    • Adjust daily officials schedule as necessary to avoid conflicts and maximize efficiency throughout shifts
    • Oversee patron access and exit from facility
    • Require patrons in violation of the Intramural Sports code of conduct to exit facility and document all violations
    • Clarify and enforce sport rules, departmental, and University policy for officials and participants
    • Provide First Aid care to injured participants
  • General Manager Functions
    • Have a full knowledge of Intramural Sports Handbook and UConn Recreation policies
    • Communicate clearly and respectfully about relevant issues with participants and UConn Recreation staff
    • Promote an environment of civility and inclusion within UConn Intramurals by enforcing policies and procedures regarding conduct as outlined in the Intramural Handbook
    • Encourage and deliver outstanding customer service by providing answers to participant questions and referring them to resources when necessary with a welcoming attitude
    • Attend all required trainings and meetings
    • Assist with department wide events including but not limited to: Adventure Race, Huskies Forever 5K, Bubble Soccer and Oozeball
    • Manage at least one one-day event per semester
    • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • One full academic year as an Intramural Official with outstanding performance
  • Familiarity with sport rules, officiating and departmental policies
  • Must have an ability to work at a high level independently
  • Maintain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Officiating certifications & outside officiating experience
  • Experience in the field of recreation
