Rock Wars Bouldering Competition

A long time ago in a Climbing Center far, far away... Rock Wars offers participants the opportunity to challenge themselves on toughest bouldering problems our route setters can devise. Climbers of all skills levels will find an event designed for maximum fun and camaraderie, in which winning takes a backseat to the love of rock climbing!

  1. Bouldering problems are worth a specific number of points based on that problem's anticipated difficulty.
  2. Climbers choose which problems to attempt and may attempt any problem as many times as they wish within the 
competition time allotment.
  3. A climb shall be considered successful and officially scored by a Zone Judge when the climber completes a 
problem from start to finish. Further, a climb is considered successful only when the climber matches both hands 
on the final hold & has their entire body under control.
  4. A climber’s attempt on a problem shall be considered a fall/failure when the climber touches any holds beyond the 
marked boundaries of the problem, touches the ground with any part of the body (does not include loose clothing), 
uses any artificial aid, or is purposely or inadvertently aided by a fellow climber or spotter.
  5. When a climber’s body leaves the ground, it is considered a single bouldering attempt. Once a single attempt ends (either by completing the route or falling), the current climber must allow another competitor the opportunity to 
climb unless said competitor(s) agree to allow the current climber to continue with another single attempt.
  6. Participants should always be climbing in control to prevent uncontrolled falls. In the event of a fall, climbers should attempt to land on their feet in an athletic stance and collapse at the knees/waist to soften the force of the fall.
  7. All natural features of the wall may be used during the climb, unless otherwise noted at the problem start.
  8. Climbers are allowed the opportunity to observe other climber’s attempts prior to their own attempt.
  9. Advice may be given to a climber between attempts on a problem, but not while the climber is attempting the problem. Zone Judges cannot supply advice on any problem.
  10. Only active climbers and Zone Judges are allowed in the marked fall zone. Anyone else must remain in the designated spectator areas.


  1. Climbers must present their scorecard to the Zone Judge prior to any problem attempt.
  2. Only judges are allowed to record a score on the scorecard.
  3. After each failed attempt, the competitor may ask that their card be returned and elect to move on to another problem.
  4. When a climber completes a problem on their first attempt, Zone Judges will place a zero in the fault box on their scorecard. Which will result in an addition 20 points added onto the problem score.
  5. The Zone Judge will note the number of falls for each problem attempted on the scorecard. Points will not be deducted for falls, but in a result in a tie. The person with the lease amount of falls, out of their best 5 climbs will be the winner.
  6. A route score will officially count towards a climber’s total score only if the Zone Judge AND witness initials are present on the scorecard at the time of card submission.
  7. Bouldering Competition Witness is defined as an another registered competitor or staff member that was watched the climbing start and finish the climb they were attempting.
