Club Sports

Club Sports Manager

Reports to:

  • Club Sports Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • General Duties:
    • Responsible for enforcing departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
    • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Office/Administrative Functions
    • Maintain regular weekly office hours
    • Assist Intern with promotional materials for Club Sports events and verify/review promotional materials for teams
    • Answer phone calls and respond to emails as advised by the Professional Staff about the Club Sports Program.
    • Administer, organize, and maintain club sports program documentation/database records through IMLeagues
      • Documentation includes but is not limited to: Semester Status Reports, Team Budgets and Financial Reports, Team Inventory Reports, Roster, waivers and medical information
  • Team Communication and Support
    • Attend club sports practices on campus & assist teams as assigned with equipment, monitoring requirements, eligibility waivers, and deadlines
  • Facility Monitoring and Management
    • Supervise and manage home club games
    • Enforce rules and regulations related to facility use and relevant general University policies
    • Complete facility safety checks
    • Responsible for opening, closing and clean-up of the facility.
    • Responsible for the set-up and takedown of equipment
    • Provide support with the upkeep and maintenance of fields and facilities by providing assistance to Professional Staff
  • General Manager Functions
    • Have a full knowledge of the Club Sports Manager Handbook
    • Obtain or have general knowledge of specific sport rules
    • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate familiarity and/or interest in club sports/recreation field

Club Sports Field Manager

Reports to:

Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service Center

Customer Service Representative

Reports to:

  • Facilities Manager
  • Facilities Intern
  • Facilities Coordinator

Basic Function        

  • Responsible for assisting the day-to-day operations of the Customer Service Center.
  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend job specific training.
  • Complete all CSC assessments prior to position start.
  • Process all financial transactions including guest passes, membership registration, program registration, and fee payments based on process outlined in the manual.
  • Reconcile cash drawer before and after each shift.
  • Greet patrons and verify access with proper identification.
  • Answer phones, direct calls as appropriate, and take messages when needed.
  • Maintain department office supplies.
  • Make, check-in and verify Racquetball court reservations.
  • Demonstrate and maintain competency of required skills.

Equipment Checkout Attendant

Reports to:

  • Facility Manager

Basic Function

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility and ensuing safety regarding the use of the Student Recreation Facility.
  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Issue equipment to patrons and collect appropriate ID.
  • Inspect the condition of equipment prior to loan as well as upon return. Report any lost or damaged equipment to the Facility Manager.
  • Clean equipment during opening shift.
  • Sweep floors during opening shift.
  • Complete equipment count sheet during opening shift.
  • Launder items from all areas under UConn Recreation. Follow procedures for operation of washers and dryers.
  • Provide assistance to participants.
  • Fold and store towels.
  • Verify the validity of patron ID cards when swiping in.
  • Assist Facility Manager during emergency situations

Floor Monitor

Reports to:

Basic Function

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility and ensuing safety regarding the use of the Student Recreation Facility.
  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean fitness equipment.
  • Check and maintain spray bottles are filled and cleaning rags are available throughout the facility.
  • Check and replace hand sanitizers.
  • Keep work out areas clean and free of obstruction.
  • Inspect (gender specific) locker rooms, garbage containers, and towel bins at the beginning of each hour.
  • Report to the Facility Manager of any exercise equipment malfunctions.
  • Provide assistance to participants regarding basic fitness equipment functions.
  • Set up and take down equipment in the activity areas (Guyer Gym, Greer Gym, and Racquetball Courts).
  • Monitor reservations of all activity areas (Guyer Gym, Greer Gym, and Racquetball Courts).
  • Assist Facility Manager during emergencies.
  • Attend job specific training.

Facility Operations

Facility Operations – Maintenance Attendant

The Maintenance Attendant will work under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Operations and Facilities and the Manager of Operations, Maintenance and Fitness Equipment.  The Maintenance Attendant performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and basic skilled work related to fitness equipment and other applicable areas in the Student Recreation Center.

Reports to:

  • Associate Director of Operations and Facilities
  • Manager of Operations, Maintenance and Fitness Equipment

Basic Function:

  • Under general supervision, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains all fitness equipment including spin bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, stair masters, selectorized weight equipment, free weights, and other fitness equipment as directed to ensure the safety of all patrons

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a daily, weekly, monthly, and semester preventative maintenance and inspection schedule for all fitness, cardio, and selectorized equipment
  • Maintains repair/maintenance documentation for all fitness, cardio, and selectorized equipment in order to create a clear and concise history of all equipment
  • Accurately maintains cardio equipment usage log to ensure longevity of equipment
  • Assist in any other tasks appointed by the Associate Director of Operations and Facilities and the Manager of Operations, Maintenance and Fitness Equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be an enrolled student

Lifeguard

Reports to:

  • Facilities Manager

Basic Function:

  • Responsible for safety and accident prevention of all activities in the pool area.
  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to the Student Recreation Facility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Remain alert and aware of all swimmers.
  • Uphold policies of the pool and the principles of the American Red Cross Lifeguard.
  • Monitor activities in and near the water through patron surveillance.
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
  • Assist Facility Manager in pool evacuation in the event of a facility related emergency.
  • Rinse and organize flotation cabinet at the end of each shift.
  • Keep pool area free from obstruction- report any issues to Facility Manager and Facility intern.
  • Empty garbage can at the end of each shift.
  • Test pH and Chlorine water levels at the beginning of each shift and complete record sheet.
  • Report any issues within Brundage Pool to the Facility Manager.

Manager

Basic Function:

  • Responsible for supervising the student staff and facility.
  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend job specific training.
  • Attend, as a member, the SRF Leadership team meetings.
  • Responsible for opening, closing, and maintaining the operation of the building.
  • Lock and unlock facility doors for all events.
  • Ensure that facility safety guidelines are adhere to by conducting half-hour building inspections.
  • Tend to equipment mal-functions, including taking it out of service if deemed necessary.
  • Record any equipment or building repairs on the equipment malfunction form.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of department policies and procedures.
  • Keep facility staff engaged and busy by delegating and overseeing tasks.
  • Assist in Fall and Spring staff training.
  • Assist with coverage of special events
  • Provide immediate response to staff disciplinary issues. Report to Facility Intern or Coordinator for further action.
  • Responsible for organizing all staff and delegating tasks in the event of an emergency.

Group Fitness

Fitness Attendant

Reports to:

  • Coordinator - Personal Training
  • Manager on Duty

Function:

  • Responsible for educating members about equipment, assisting in upkeep of fitness floors, and enforcement of policy.
  • Provide welcoming and inclusive environment to members while regularly greeting them upon arrival and departure.
  • Provide members with general information about facility, policies, functions of equipment, and other recreation departments.
  • Educate and enforce fitness policies with participants.  Ensure there is no misuse or abuse of machines and equipment.
  • Maintain the organization of the fitness floor by regularly re-racking dumbbells/plates and correcting placement of benches.
  • Be available to provide a spot to members and help with equipment setup.
  • Ensure a safe environment by consistently monitoring each fitness zone.
  • Assist members with direction to fitness studios/classes.
  • Promote fitness and wellness programs.
  • Report maintenance and equipment issues, safety needs, and injuries to the MOD on duty.

Instructor-in-Training

Reports to:

Function:

  • Responsible for conducting safe, effective, and enjoyable group exercise classes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach safe and effective group fitness classes under the supervision of a Veteran instructor.
  2. Work under the supervision of a veteran instructor to develop a workout routine that is creative and challenging for all level. Provide modifications and progressions when needed.
  3. Ensure a safe workout environment for all participants.
  4. Responsible for earning an accredited group fitness certification as approved by Group Fitness
  5. Working knowledge of fitness equipment, studio setup, and audio equipment.
  6. Report equipment or general studio issues to Supervisor and Group Fitness management.
  7. Commitment to attend mandatory weekly Instructor Training Program meetings and trainings.
  8. Responsible for enforcing departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to Group Fitness.

  2. Follow proper workout, exercises, reps, and sets as outlined in Pack Training Manual.
  3. Ensure a safe workout environment for all participants.
  4. Contribute to development of Pack Training Manual by providing input and workout submissions to Fitness Specialist.
  5. Working knowledge of fitness equipment, studio setup, and audio equipment.
  6. Report any equipment or general studio issues to Fitness Specialist.
  7. Commitment to attend mandatory Pack Coach workshops and training sessions.

Student Manager

Reports to:

  • Fitness Specialist

Function:

  • Responsible for assisting in the daily operations of Group Fitness including training and coaching staff members, instructor evaluations, studio needs, and tasks designated by the Fitness Specialist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides guidance and mentorship to elevate Group Fitness employees of all levels.
  2. Assist Fitness Specialist in lecturing and instruction of Weekly Meetings as part of the Instructor Training Program.
  3. Evaluates and provides feedback to Group Fitness Instructors on instructor abilities i.e., form, cueing, content, class design, music choice, etc.
  4. Assists in creation of semesterly Pack Small Group Training Manual and weekly Pack Pages for review by Fitness Specialist.
  5. Provides feedback to Group Fitness staff at-large regarding areas for improvement at monthly staff meetings.
  6. Assists in communication with Group Fitness staff members regarding meetings, trainings, important dates, reminders, etc.
  7. Assist Fitness Specialist in selecting new Instructors-in-Training at Fitness, SPINNING®, and ZUMBA® auditions.
  8. Responsible for general upkeep and regular cleaning of Group Fitness studios and Pack Training equipment.
  9. Responsible for coordinating shift coverage when necessary.
  10. Assists with additional program related events as designated by Fitness Specialist.

Intramural Official

Reports to:

Responsibilities:

  • General Duties
    • Enforce departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation

    • Provide sportsmanship rating for each game and document all sportsmanship issues before, during and after contests
    • Assist managers with all necessary forms
    • Set-up and clean-up playing areas before and after each competition with an emphasis on risk management
  • Contest and Facility Management
    • Officiate intramural sports as outlined by staff during Officials’ Training Clinics
    • Promote good sportsmanship amongst all participants by enforcing policies & procedures as outlined in the Intramural Handbook
    • Utilize proper mechanics and signals as instructed during training by UConn Intramurals staff
    • Scorekeep contests and provide assistance to officials and managers to ensure safe and fair play

UConn Outdoors

Adventure Center Attendant

Reports To:

  • Outdoor Intern
  • Outdoor Specialist
  • Outdoor Coordinator

Basic Function:

Responsible for daily operations of UConn Adventure Center (UAC) including event registration, equipment rental, and customer service regarding program offerings from UConn Outdoors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to and implement departmental and university policies & procedures in all matters relevant to the UAC

  • Responsible cash handling and accurate processing of rental and registration transactions

Climbing Center Attendant

Reports to: 

  • Outdoor Intern

Basic Function:

Responsible for the daily operation of the Climbing Center including customer service, routine maintenance, providing equipment rentals, and maintaining a safe environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to the Climbing Center
  • Contribute towards an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service
  • Monitor facility use and maintain a safe environment for climbers
  • Perform daily equipment safety checks, cleaning, and maintenance

Climbing Center Route Setter

Reports to:

Basic Function:

Responsible for safely setting climbing routes that will be engaging and challenging to participants

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to the Climbing Center
  • Contribute to an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service
  • Set climbing routes for both top-rope and bouldering problems as directed by Supervisor
  • Removal and cleaning of holds from climbing wall
  • Inspect equipment and facility relevant to route setting, remove any potential hazards and report to a supervisor
  • Maintaining accurate records of climbing route log
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Student currently enrolled at the University of Connecticut
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and verbal communication skills
  • Completed all department and area required training
  • Maintain CPR / AED certifications
  • Experience working at the Climbing Center

Bike Mechanic Assistant

Pay Rate: $10.50

Reports to: 

  • Outdoor Programs Assistant Director
  • Outdoor Programs Coordinator
  • Bike Mechanic

Positions Directly Supervised:

None

Basic Function:

Responsible for assisting in maintaining, repairing bicycles for bike fleets, as well as keeping
accurate log of activities. Preform preliminary checks on bikes to assess damage and perform
routine maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management maintenance, accurate inventory, and repair bike fleets
  • Identify and report issues with bikes to Mechanic and Outdoor Coordinator
  • Keep accurate log of work completed each shift
  • Assist customers by providing necessary maintenance to UAC rental fleet and relevant
    equipment within scope of individuals training
  • Maintain cleanliness/ organization of UAC bike fleet and relevant equipment
  • Assist in teaching bike clinics and programs in a clear, comprehensive, and professional
    manner

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Student currently enrolled at the University of Connecticut
  • Leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Maintain CPR/ AED certifications
  • Commitment to complete training and tutorials for UAC bikeshop

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a bike mechanic in a shop
