DEKA MILE & DEKA STRONG

DEKA is an indoor fitness competition featuring a race course with 10 functional fitness zones – it’s fitness gamified and designed for all levels. No matter your background or experience, DEKA will help you set your baseline and train with a purpose.

DEKA MILE includes a 160-meter run before each zone, 1 mile total.

Test yourself against a global fitness standard, earn your DEKA Mark and commemorate your achievement with your finisher medal and t-shirt!

Test your strength at the UConn Rec Powerlifting Competition!

Join us for a UConn Rec Powerlifting event! No prior competition experience is required, though familiarity with the three required lifts - squat, bench press, deadlift is recommended.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 22nd, starting at 10:30 AM, and is open exclusively to SRC members. Winners will be determined by a lifter's total weight lifted relative to their body weight.

Registration Opens January 20th and closes February 19th at 11:59pm.

The Course

The DEKA course will consist of 10 training zones. For DEKA MILE, you will run 160m before each zone. For DEKA STRONG, there is no running. The zones are always presented in this order:

Zone 1. 30 Weighted Alternating Reverse Lunge (33#/55#)

Zone 2. 500m Row

Zone 3. 20 Box Jump Over/Step Overs (24" Box)

Zone 4. 25 Med-Ball Sit-Ups (14#/20#)

Zone 5. 500m Ski Erg

Zone 6. 100m Dumbbell Farmers Carry (40#/60#)

Zone 7. 25 Cal Air Bike

Zone 8. 20 Dead Ball Shoulder Overs (40#/60#)

Zone 9. 100m Tank Push/Pull

Zone 10. 20 Weighted Burpees (22#/44#)

Your score will be based on the time it takes to complete the full circuit.

Weights are listed as female/male.

Competition 10:30am - 4:30pm SRC Zone 1

The event will consist of three heat waves. Wave 1: All participants will complete their squat attempts. Wave 2: After the squat wave, we will proceed to the bench press. Wave 3: The competition will conclude with the deadlift attempts.

What to Expect

ARRIVAL:
Plan to arrive at 9:00am. Upon arrival, you will check in at the Husky Suite. The mandatory weigh-in will take place in the Husky Suite. There will be limited space available for personal belongings.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Your UConn ID (No UConn ID, No admission to facility. No exceptions.)
  • Water
  • Snacks - Allowed in Free Zone only. No food permitted in Zone 1/competition area.
  • Lifting accessories (ie wrist wraps, knee sleeves, belts)

Chalk will be provided. DO NOT bring your own chalk.

SPECTATORS:
There will be a limited area for spectators. All spectators must hold a UConn Rec membership.

Event Rules

  • Liquid chalk is provided. You may NOT bring your own chalk.
  • Closed-toed shoes must be worn on all lifts
  • Wrist wraps are permitted
  • Belts are permitted for deadlifting, if desired
  • Knee high socks/sleeves or pants required for deadlift
  • The following are NOT permitted:
    • Knee wraps
    • Straps/grips
    • Gloves
    • Outside chalk
    • Cameras/photography

FAQs

Who can participate?

This event is open to UConn Rec members only. No Previous competition experience is needed. However, some experience with the 3 required lifts is recommended.

How many attempts do I have for each lift?

You will have three (3) attempts for each lift

Do you allow spectators?

There will be limited area for spectators. Spectators must hold a current UConn Rec membership.

Do I have to be a UConn student or have a UConn Rec membership to participate?

Yes - you need a UConn Recreation membership to participate.

Can I bring food?

NO food is allowed in the fitness zones but you can eat in the free zone lobby.

When do I weigh-in?

All participants must weigh in at 9:00am.

Do I need prior experience of lifting?

Some knowledge is recommended for the 3 lifts.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes - $20

Is coaching allowed?

No, coaching is not permitted.

Can my friend spot me?

No

Can I bring chalk?

No, UConn Rec will provide liquid chalk.

What do I wear?

You're permitted to use a belt, knee sleeves, wrist wraps, closed-toed shoes. However, knee wraps and wrist straps are not allowed, as they provide an unfair advantage.

How do I know when I lift?

The competition will begin at 10:30am. Competitors will be assigned to a group based on rack height. Group assignments provided at check-in begins at 9am.

  3. All Competitors complete Deadlift

Can I leave and come back?

Yes. When you check in, you will be provided with a Group Assignment Number. If you leave the SRC, you must show this number and your UConn ID for re-entry.
