Competitive Sports

Site Manager

General Duties:
  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and standard operating procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service, in which inclusion and equity is prioritized.
  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations by activating the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings, as assigned, and respond to email communication in a timely manner.
  • Assist professional staff in demonstrating relevant skills and providing feedback to officials during training clinics and intramural shifts.
  • Provide operational support for game management, including documentation of sportsmanship rating, score keeping, and submittal of necessary documentation, reports, and forms by end of shift.
  • Serve as the shift manager for assigned location.
  • Perform a safety inspection at each facility prior to the start of a shift and document all concerns in the appropriate forms.
  • Report imminent safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Setup and breakdown of equipment for the courts and fields, as required.
  • Support department wide events, as assigned.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must hold CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, at time of anticipated employment start date.
  • Regularly required to kneel, bend, crouch, lift, reach, and push and pull up to 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to work weekend and evening hours and during inclement weather situations.
  • One full academic year of previous experience working within UConn Recreation with a performance rating of excellent.
  • Officiating certification or previous officiating experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Intramural Official

General Duties:

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.

  • Officiate intramural sports utilizing proper mechanics, signals, protocols, and procedures as instructed during training.
  • Provide operational support for game management, including documentation of sportsmanship rating, score keeping, and submittal of necessary documentation, reports, and forms by end of shift.

Facilities & Operations

Operations Assistant

General Duties:

  • Provide direct service to patrons and participants.

  • As the customer service assistant, monitor access control, greet patrons, and verify access with photo identification.
  • As the customer service assistant, process guest passes and verify identification prior to entry.
  • As the customer service assistant, answer patron questions and request support from the Manager on Duty as needed.
  • As the customer service assistant, when entry is denied, direct patron to appropriate area for support and provide ‘direction card.’
  • As the equipment check assistant, verify student ID, and fulfill requests for equipment rental.
  • As the equipment check assistant, launder towels, fold, and restock towel kiosks.
  • As the facility assistant, complete assigned cleaning tasks from maintenance log. Confirm completion of the tasks.
  • As the facility assistant, monitor activity of patrons and reinforce safety and proper policy.
  • As the facility assistant, complete scheduled maintenance, as assigned. Submit report.
  • As the facility assistant, collect soiled towels, load, and operate the washing machine and dryer. Remove clean towels, fold towels, and fill towel storage racks.
  • As the facility assistant, restock Towel Tracker.
  • As the facility assistant, upon request, unlock locker for patron. Confirm contents and verify identity.
  • As the facility assistant, complete set-up and take down of programming and rooms, as scheduled.
  • Record all equipment and facility maintenance/housekeeping issues in the maintenance log. Report imminent safety concerns to Manager on Duty.
  • Collaborate with the operations team to coordinate closing procedures.

Lifeguard

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and standard operating procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations by activating the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).

  • Enforce principles of the American Red Cross Lifeguard. Continuously guard and scan the pool area.
  • Responsible for the setup of lanes, diving blocks, water polo goals, etc. for all open swim, competitive sports, and UConn Recreation events.
  • Responsible for safety and accident prevention of all activities in the Aquatic Center.
  • Responsible for completing all shift tasks within assigned daily task list, to include, but not be limited to, testing ADA equipment, clearing the deck, cleaning stainless steel railings, and sanitizing guard stands.
  • Conduct pool inspections and complete pool chemical logs; report imbalances or concerns to the Manager on Duty.
  • Report imminent safety concerns to Manager on Duty.
  • Conduct opening and closing procedures as described in procedures protocol.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Fitness and Wellness

Fitness Assistant

General Duties:

  • Provide assistance to instructors and patrons of Group Fitness programs and classes.

  • Lead equipment orientations with members, as scheduled.
  • Educate and enforce fitness equipment safety and facility policies with participants.
  • Complete assigned inspections and, log issues.
  • Complete regularly scheduled equipment checks and studio inspections; report imminent safety concerns to Manager on Duty.
  • Maintain the organization of the fitness areas, studios, and equipment, including re-racking of weights and repositioning equipment as necessary (assigned).
  • Perform cleaning responsibilities, as assigned, and defined in the Cleaning Protocol Manual, record in log.
  • As the Fitness Assistant, monitor activity of patrons and reinforce safety and proper policy.
  • Upon request, unlock locker for patron. Collect and verify identification and confirm identity.

Personal Trainer

General Duties:

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.

  • Complete Functional Movement Screenings, as assigned.
  • Adhere to the UConn Recreations standards for Personal Trainers.
  • Create a well-balanced, goal-oriented fitness programs for clients.
  • Clean and store all equipment used during a session.
  • Work assigned Fitness Assistant shifts and maintain the client base established upon hiring.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a degree or in process of earning a degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, or related health and fitness field.
  • Must hold a current Personal Trainer certification from a nationally accredited organization such as ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), NSCA (National Strength & Conditioning Association), ACE (American Council on Exercise) or NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine)
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Regularly required to kneel, bend, lift, reach, and push and pull up to 30 lbs.

Fitness Instructor

General Duties:

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.

  • Responsible for the planning and execution of group fitness classes that are suitable for all levels, by providing modifications and progressions when needed.
  • Instruct participants in proper exercise form through use of verbal, visual, and kinesthetic cues.
  • Teach a minimum of two (2) classes per week.
  • Setup, operate, and store all group fitness equipment.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates for Group Fitness Instructor must be accepted and must complete our Group Fitness Instructor Training (GFIT) program. Exception to this would be a Yoga or Pilates instructor that has previously completed the required hours of training.
  • Have at least one current nationally accredited fitness certification as approved by Group Fitness or the ability to obtain a certification upon conclusion of Group Fitness Instructor Training (GFIT) program.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED certification within first month of employment.
  • Regularly required to kneel, bend, crouch, lift, reach, and push and pull up to 30 lbs.

UConn Outdoors

Adventure Center Assistant

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and standard operating procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service, in which inclusion and equity is prioritized.
  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations by activating the Emergency Response Plan (ERP).
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings, as assigned, and respond to email communication in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for daily operations of UConn Adventure Center (UAC). Duties include event registration, equipment rental, and processing equipment returns.
  • Responsible for accurately processing financial transactions for all equipment rental and program registrations.
  • Responsible for renting bicycles. Duties include, adjust seat height, assist with helmet fitting, and perform safety check.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all rental equipment, including ability to instruct in proper usage of equipment.
  • Conduct inspection of all rental equipment, including damage, dysfunction, or missing parts and submit appropriate documentation.
  • Prepare equipment for events, trips, and clinics.
  • Conduct post trip vehicle inspection.
  • Conduct semiannual equipment inventory inspection.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Bike Mechanic Assistant

General Duties:

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.

  • Perform preliminary checks on bikes to assess damage and document findings in provided inspection report software.
  • Perform routine maintenance, as defined in the standard operating procedures.
  • Confirm completion of work in task list.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of all bike shop equipment, tools, storage, and workspaces.
  • Assist professional staff to instruct bike clinics and programs.
  • Manage the operation of the bike shop during “Ask a Mechanic Hour” sessions.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Climbing Center Manager

General Duties:

  • Serves as the shift manager for the operation of the Climbing Center.
  • Supervise climbing procedures and safety of participants.
  • Remove damaged equipment and document potential safety issues in supported software.
  • Report imminent safety concerns to the Manager on Duty.
  • Instruct climbing orientation, belay lessons, and other advanced climbing clinics.
  • Responsible for adding membership status for users that successfully complete orientations.
  • Adhere to and implement policies and procedures for Climbing Center.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of climbing center and equipment. Document
    and submit accurate inspection reports.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must hold CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, at time of anticipated employment start date.
  • Ability to complete CWI (Climbing Wall Instructor Course) or equivalent, prior to start of job (course provided by UConn Recreation).

Climbing Center Assistant

  • Monitor patrons during activity in the auto belay and top rope areas.
  • Perform daily cleaning duties including vacuuming, wiping surfaces, and organizing equipment.
  • Report all safety concerns and damaged equipment to Climbing Center Manager.
  • Complete check-in and check-out of Climbing Center equipment.
  • Clean hardware, holds, ropes, and other climbing center equipment, according to assigned task
    list.
  • Assist the Climbing Center Manager with special events, programs, and clinics as assigned.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Climbing Center Route Setter

General Duties:

  • Inspect equipment and remove any potential hazards or damaged equipment and document in maintenance log.
  • Organize equipment, hardware, tools, and facility spaces relevant to route setting.
  • Accurately document and maintain records of climbing route log.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must concurrently work a minimum of 6-hours per week in one of the other UConn Outdoors positions

Support Services

Administrative Assistant

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and standard operating procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.

  • Assist the Assistant Director of Programming in the day-to-day business of UConn Rec.
  • Provide Student Recreation Center tours to prospective members during business hours as assigned.
  • Interact with patrons to assist with questions about programs, memberships, and the Student Recreation Center.
  • Provide administrative support for all programmatic areas.
  • Responsible for processing and organizing all lost and found items. Contact patrons and assist with item return as applicable.
  • Sort and distribute mail and deliveries.
  • Serve as a tour guide for events including but not limited to Open House, Alumni Weekend, and other scheduled events at the Student Recreation Center.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Marketing Assistant

General Duties:

  • Provide direct service to UConn Recreation patrons.

  • Marketing Assistants have a general understanding of all UConn Recreation programs and services. Responsible for adhering to departmental brand guidelines, messaging, and visual identity.
  • Marketing Assistants create and design the marketing materials to support the programs and events of UConn Recreation, including digital and print signage, graphics, photos, and videos for UConn Recreation’s social media, website, and promotional displays.
  • Work collaboratively with the Marketing Coordinator and team to build and schedule social media and advertising campaigns.
  • Assist Marketing Coordinator in organizing and preparing promotional materials to fulfill department marketing requests.
  • Assist marketing department in the maintenance, inventory, and organization of UConn Recreation promotional items and apparel.
  • Responsible for keeping cameras, video equipment, and accessories organized and in good working order.
  • Responsible for providing day-of marketing support and photo coverage for UConn Recreation activities and events as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • General experience in one or more applications related to Graphic Design, Adobe Creative Suite, Photo Editing, Canva, or Video Editing
  • Photography experience a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work assigned office hours and provide event coverage and support. Night and weekend work is required.
