Competitive Sports

Site Manager

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and university policies and procedures
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Have full knowledge of Club Sports, Intramurals, and UConn Recreation policies.
  • Obtain or have general knowledge of specific sport rules
  • Clarify and enforce sports rules, departmental, and University policies for officials and participants.
  • Supervise and manage assigned events on campus, including club sports practices/competitions and intramural events
  • Assist professional staff in demonstrating relevant skills and providing feedback to officials during training clinics and intramural shifts
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and trainings
  • Complete all necessary documentation, reports, and forms
  • Enforce rules & regulations related to facility use, oversee patron access and exit from satellite recreational facilities
  • Check facilities for safety issues prior to the start of a shift and report all risk management concerns to appropriate staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Other Job Requirements:

  • Schedule will vary. Weekend and evening work required.  Must be able to work late at night and during inclement weather situations.
  • Assist with Department wide events including but not limited to: Road Races, Bubble Soccer and Oozeball

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with sports rules, officiating and UConn Recreation departmental policies
  • Must have ability to work at a high level independently
  • Maintain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications
  • One full academic year as an Intramural Official with outstanding performance

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Officiating certifications or previous officiating experience
  • Experience in the field of recreation

Intramural Official

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Officiate intramural sports as outlined by staff during Officials’ Training Clinics.
  • Promote good sportsmanship amongst all participants by enforcing policies & procedures as outlined in the Intramural Handbook.
  • Utilize proper mechanics and signals as instructed during training by UConn Intramurals staff.
  • Scorekeep contests and provide assistance to officials and managers to ensure safe and fair play.
  • Provide sportsmanship rating for each game and document all sportsmanship issues before, during and after contests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Have knowledge of sport rules

Facilities & Operations

Customer Service Assistant

General Duties:

  • Enforce departmental and university policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with professional staff, University partners, & daily visitors.
  • Process all financial transactions including guest passes, membership registrations, program registrations, and fee payments.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Customer Service Center.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Reconcile sales report after each shift.
  • Greet patrons and verify access with proper identification.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in customer service and/or cashiering.

Facility Attendant

General Duties:

  • Enforce departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Complete daily assigned tasks that support the day-to-day operations of the Student Recreation Center, with a primary focus on cleaning of equipment and facility.
  • Supervise activity of patrons and reinforce safety and proper policy as needed.
  • Operate washers and dryers to launder UConn Recreation items.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Apply risk management skills to maintain a safe environment for patrons.
  • Provide assistance to patrons.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Lifeguard

General Duties:

  • Enforce departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Uphold Aquatic Center policies and the principles of the American Red Cross lifeguard.
  • Provide programmatic support by assisting in the setup of lanes, diving blocks, water polo goals, etc.
  • Responsible for safety and accident prevention of all activities in the Aquatic Center.
  • Participate in monthly in-service lifeguard trainings.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Must hold current lifeguard certification through the American Red Cross or Ellis Associates at time of anticipated employment start date.

Facility Operations – Maintenance Attendant

General Duties:

  • Enforce departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Under general supervision, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains all fitness equipment including spin bikes, treadmills, elliptical, selectorized weight equipment, free weight, and other fitness equipment as directed to ensure the safety of all patrons.
  • Maintain repair/maintenance documentations for all fitness, cardio, and selectorized equipment in order to create a clear and concise history of all equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and lift objects/equipment that weighs at least 50 pounds.

  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the fitness areas and studios.
  • Ensure a safe environment by consistently monitoring each fitness zone.

UConn Outdoors

Adventure Center Assistant

Adventure Center Assistant

General Duties:

  • Responsible for daily operations of UConn Adventure Center (UAC) including event registration, equipment rental, and customer service regarding program offerings from UConn Outdoors.
  • Responsible cash handling and accurate processing of rental and registration transactions.
  • Assist customers with equipment rentals, reservations, and returns.
  • Familiarity with rental equipment: able to instruct on proper use and able to inspect and identify potential damage, dysfunction, or missing parts.
  • Assist with equipment preparation for events, trips, and clinics

Bike Mechanic Assistant

Bike Mechanic Assistant

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

  • Responsible for assisting in maintaining, repairing bicycles for bike fleets, as well as keeping
    accurate log of activities. Preform preliminary checks on bikes to assess damage and perform
    routine maintenance.
  • Assist in the management maintenance, accurate inventory, and repair bike fleets.
  • Identify and report issues with bikes to Mechanic and Outdoor Coordinator.
  • Keep accurate log of work completed each shift.
  • Assist customers by providing necessary maintenance to UAC rental fleet and relevant
    equipment within scope of individuals training.
  • Maintain cleanliness/ organization of UAC bike fleet and relevant equipment.
  • Assist in teaching bike clinics and programs in a clear, comprehensive, and professional
    manner

Climbing Center Assistant

Climbing Center Assistant

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.

  • Responsible for the daily operation of the Climbing Center including customer service, routine maintenance, providing equipment rentals, and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Monitor facility use and maintain a safe environment for climbers.
  • Perform daily equipment safety checks, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Remove and report any potential safety issues to Supervisor
  • Assist participants with check-out and check-in of Climbing Center equipment
  • Follow established curriculum for instructional content of orientations and renewals

Climbing Center Manager

  • Supervise climbs when the climbing center is open.
  • Instruct climbing orientation, belay lesson and other advance climbing clinics.
  • Must be able to evaluate and provide constructive feedback to patrons & staff.
  • Adhere to and implement policy and procedures for Climbing Center.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Ability to complete CWI (Climbing Wall Instructor Course) within first 3 months of employment (provided by UConn Recreation)
    • Climbing Skill NEED TO COMPLETE CWI TRAINING:
      • Must have taken part in periodic climbing for 2 – 3 years OR a high intensity of climbing in the past few months.
      • Easily put on harness and appropriately tie in to climb
      • Belay with an aperture belay device and an assisted locking device in competent, comfortable and confident manner
      • Comfortably top rope at the 5.9 level on an artificial climbing wall.

Climbing Center Route Setter

Administrative Assistant

Administrative Assistant

General Duties:

  • Responsible for enforcing departmental and University policies and procedures in all matters pertaining to UConn Recreation.
  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Provide administrative support for all programmatic areas
  • Responsible for the processing of all lost & found items
  • Screen incoming mail and telephone calls
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Programming in the day-to-day business of UConn Rec
  • Serve as a tour guide for events such as Open House, Alumni Weekend, and other scheduled events at the Rec Center

Marketing Assistant

Marketing Assistant

General Duties:

  • Support an environment that encourages, values, and delivers outstanding customer service.
  • Marketing Assistants create and design the marketing materials to support the programs and offerings of UConn Recreation, including graphics and photos for UConn Recreation’s social media and web sites.

Job Requirements:

  • Well versed, advanced experience in Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Ability to think creatively while adhering to brand and department standards.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong design skills.
  • Ideal candidates also have a working knowledge of WordPress, and a medium level of photography experience.
